Interview with Shawn Saulsberry
Q: Let’s start with your background. Can you share a bit about your journey?
Absolutely. I was born in England but raised in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where I spent 11 formative years at the Academy of the Sacred Heart. Leadership has always been central to who I am—I graduated high school as Student Body President and continued that passion for service at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where I served as a Resident Advisor.
My love for storytelling and analysis led me to major in English Language and Literature, which culminated in an extraordinary opportunity to complete my Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Oxford. Law school was where I encountered work that didn’t just shape my future—it reshaped lives. At Wayne State University Law School, I interned at the Michigan Innocence Clinic, working alongside clinic co-founder Dave Moran and private investigator Scott Lewis. Together, we helped secure the exoneration of Mubarez Ahmed. That moment wasn’t just a legal victory—it was a testament to the power of advocacy and the gravity of justice. It ignited a deeper mission within me, one that led to the founding of a nonprofit aimed at increasing access to higher education for high school students.
Most recently, I earned my MBA from the University of Rochester, Simon Business School, with a focus on Strategy Consulting and a minor in Leadership. Throughout business school, people often asked me about my career goals. The simple answer? I want to run my own consulting firm and become an entrepreneur. But the more honest answer? Life isn’t linear, and neither is my journey.
Q: You’ve had quite a diverse path. How has that shaped you?
As a child, my dreams were vast and ever-changing—I wanted to be a veterinarian, a DJ, a homicide detective, an author. But life had its own plans. After my father was detained and deported, I had to pivot. I became a barista, a dessert bar sous chef, a Systems IT assistant, a medical office front desk manager—each role shaping my resilience, adaptability, and ability to transform.
Despite the unpredictability of my path, one thing has remained constant: my commitment to making a difference. I continue to mentor high school and law students because I believe in the power of representation, guidance, and lifting others as I climb. Success isn’t just about having a plan—it’s about being agile enough to embrace new paths when change demands it. Strategy, transformation, and a strong support system have shaped my story, and they will continue to define every opportunity I pursue.
Q: How do your values align with those of Saulsberry Group?
Shawn Saulsberry, Owner and CEO of Saulsberry Group, is deeply committed to creating a meaningful impact—both for his clients and the Charleston community. What sets his consultancy apart is its dedication to making high-quality consulting services accessible to as many businesses and organizations as possible while maintaining affordability.
I resonate with Saulsberry Group’s mission because inclusion has always been a core value of mine. The firm serves businesses that are often overlooked by Big 4 consulting firms, ensuring they receive the strategic support needed to thrive. At its heart, Saulsberry Group is about empowerment—investing time, energy, and resources to help clients reach their full potential.
As a dual US-UK citizen, I’ve often reflected on the disparities in access to opportunities and the barriers that prevent some from advancing. I’m passionate about expanding access because I firmly believe that when one person succeeds, we all succeed.
Q: What skills and experience are you looking to gain?
I aim to develop a strong technical skill set, along with expertise in project management, sales, and presentation skills. Beyond building these capabilities, I am eager to gain hands-on consulting experience, applying what I learn in real-world scenarios.
I am particularly interested in understanding the client procurement process, mastering the intricacies of the consulting workflow, and learning how to navigate challenges effectively. Adapting to obstacles and turning them into opportunities is a critical skill in this field, and I aim to strengthen the strategic thinking needed to pivot when necessary.
Q: What’s it like working with Saulsberry Group?
Working alongside Shawn has been an empowering and enlightening experience that has fueled my enthusiasm for both consulting and professional growth. He fosters an open and supportive environment where I feel confident asking questions and sharing honest, thoughtful insights. As a leader, he provides clear and concise feedback that not only drives meaningful conversations but also accelerates my personal and professional development.
Beyond our direct interactions, listening to Shawn’s podcast appearances and reading his published articles has given me valuable, up-to-date insights into Saulsberry Group and the consulting industry as a whole. As a Charleston native, Shawn is deeply committed to a purpose larger than himself—building a lasting legacy of prosperity and global excellence in Charleston, South Carolina. His vision excites me about the future of this vibrant city, where businesses and organizations are poised for significant growth and transformation.
Q: What does it mean to you to remove the barrier of ‘consulting exclusionism’?
It means expanding access, creating opportunities, and ensuring that everyone has the chance to thrive. This impact extends beyond individual businesses and organizations—it strengthens the communities they serve and contributes to the overall growth and prosperity of the entire region.
Q: Finally, what do you do for fun?
I’m an avid reader, so in my free time, you’ll often find me at the Bloomfield Township Public Library or browsing the shelves of a local bookstore. I also have a passion for travel and love crafting detailed itineraries to make the most of every trip—whether it’s hiking the sand dunes in Traverse City, MI, or exploring the King Center in Atlanta, GA.
As an animal lover (and proud owner of two rescue cats), I use my Valentine’s Day birthday as an opportunity to give back, organizing fundraisers for shelters and sanctuaries and inviting my loved ones to be “sweethearts” for the animals. Recently, I learned about First Watch Rescue of Farmington from my sister, Zahrah, who saved a group of kittens and their mother from near-death after finding them outside in the dead of winter. I am now a brand ambassador for the organization and look forward to raising awareness about their efforts so more animals can be saved.
Lastly, as an extroverted introvert, I enjoy catching up with family and friends—whether it’s over brunch, at the movies, or on a walk outside.
Q: Any final thoughts?
If there’s one lesson my journey has taught me, it’s this: Success isn’t just about having a plan—it’s about being willing to embrace change. Strategy, transformation, and a strong support system have shaped my path, and they will continue to define the opportunities I pursue. No matter where life takes me next, my foundation is clear—growth, impact, and the courage to embrace the unexpected.
